Be cautious if someone:
- Pressures you to provide personal information.
- Asks for money or financial information.
- Sends suspicious links, attachments or requests any type of code or confirmation number.
- Shares a story that seems too good to be true or very urgent.
If you suspect someone is trying to scam you, avoid engaging with them and use our platform’s reporting feature to notify us of the suspicious activity.
The following are some REAL examples of what some of these scammers will say to scare you and try to trick you into sending money.
"Hello I have found little Rebecca. She is safe with me, if you want to see her again I will want $250"
"Hello Jim I have found Brandy, if you would like too see her again I will want a payment. Message me back asap or she will be sold."
"Hello, I have found your dog. She is safe but if you wanna see her again I will want $400."
Occasionally they will send a neutral message or two first to gain your trust. Keep an eye out for grammar mistakes too, as there can often be a language barrier.
If your phone number is listed on a lost/found poster, this gives everyone access to your number, so texting scams are common. Be wary of any links, confirmation code requests, if they ask for your email address etc. All you need to see is a photo of your pet, so do not fall for their horrible acting.
Scammers will target people on social media as well. The typical scam on social is someone will comment on your post stating something like "I used this pet tracker to find my dog" and will include a link. From there you will be instructed to pay the "Pet Tracker". Always be cautious when money is involved. There are some legit pet trackers or pet detectives out there, but they will have a website, plenty of reviews and will meet you in person, call you, facetime etc.
At the end of the day, if you are unsure if you are being scammed or not, please contact us. We have the ability to look up conversation history & usually a scammer will reach out to multiple people, not just you. We can confirm for you if in fact the person messaging you is a scammer.
